Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University soccer team received a pair of goals from sophomore Rebecca Bohler on Friday as the Bulldogs streaked to a 2-0 victory over the Jacksonville Gamecocks at Bulldog Field.

"This was an in-state rivalry match and it feels good to get a win," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "I didn't think that we played extremely well tonight, but I think that we played extremely hard. I'm proud of my players and the effort that they gave out there, because they battled hard the entire match."

With the win, Samford (7-2-2, 2-1 OVC) earned its fourth-consecutive victory over the Gamecocks and remained undefeated at home this season. The Bulldogs currently own an unblemished 5-0 mark in Birmingham this year and have not lost a match at home since Nov. 7, 2004.

Samford's Bohler scored the game-winning goal at 13:27 into the match and later tacked on her second score of the contest during the 67th minute.

"Rebecca's early goal really took a lot of pressure off of us," Yelton said. "Any time that you get out to an early lead it's a huge benefit and I think that it allowed us to play a little bit differently tonight. It was a fantastic goal."

A native of Augusta, Ga., Bohler tallied her second and third goals of the season against Jacksonville State (5-5-1, 2-1 OVC) on Friday night. Including a second-half score at Morehead State on Sept. 25, Bohler has scored each of Samford's last three goals.

The Bulldogs' freshmen, Valerie Kikkert and Cayley Winters, each earned assists on Bohler's first goal, while Kim Matthews was credited with an assist on Samford's second score.

Jacksonville State had its four-match winning streak snapped on Friday.

The Gamecocks' Daniela Malta, Ashley Smith and Kristi Pereira each attempted two shots in the contest and freshman goalkeeper Kate Kelly registered three saves.

Samford's freshman goalkeeper Cayley Winters recorded her second-straight shutout on Friday.

The Bulldogs' highly-touted native of Littleton, Colo., stopped six shots against Jacksonville State and improved her goals-against average to 0.25 on the season.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 7, as the Bulldogs resume its current three-match homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks.
