BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team lost to cross-town rival UAB in a three-game match (12-30, 29-31, 29-31) Tuesday night in Seibert Hall.
The Bulldogs (2-3) dropped their third match of the season, while the Blazers improved to 4-0. Samford freshman Sara Sears recorded 13 kills, while freshman Jackie Jaszcz tallied 32 assists. Junior Callaway Logan led the team with 14 digs.
The Bulldogs dropped the first game to UAB, 12-30. The Blazers hit .500 compared to Samford's .043 and Isabel Oquendo had seven kills and hit .500.
The Bulldogs adjusted after the first game, but lost 29-31 in each of the final two games of the match. In game two, Samford hit a match-high .342, and sophomore Angela Dempski turned in seven kills and hit .600. Sears matched Dempski in game three, when she notched seven kills of her own.
"I was pleased with our comeback in games two and three," said Samford head coach Michelle Durban. "We'll need to continue to improve and make fewer errors as we head into this weekend."
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday when they play host to the Samford Invitational Tournament. Western Carolina, Fairfield and intra-city rival Birmingham Southern will compete in the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
