Women's Basketball Falls To Tennessee Tech, 63-51

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season in a 63-51 setback to Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon at Seibert Hall.

Samford (11-4, 6-2 OVC) was led by Andrea Ward, Alex Munday and Cora Beth Smith with nine points each. Munday, Chelsee Insell and Ward pulled down six rebounds apiece for the Bulldogs.

For Tennessee Tech (11-4, 7-1 OVC), Emily Christian led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds. Kendall Cavin scored 20 points for the Golden Eaglettes.

The Bulldogs started slowly as Tennessee Tech jumped out to an early 13-3 lead with 14:27 to go in the first half. Samford cut the lead to seven at 15-8, but Tech pushed the lead to 12 at 24-12 at the 6:39 mark in the first half. Samford then went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to seven at 25-18 with 2:10 to go in the half on a layup by Smith. The Golden Eaglettes carried at 29-21 lead into halftime.

Samford cut the lead to four early in the second half at 33-29 on a three-pointer by Taryn Towns with 16:25 to go in the game. After a basket by Christian to make the score 35-29, Insell hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to three at 35-32 with 15:39 to play. The team's traded baskets over the next few minutes, but Samford tied the score at 41-41 with 12:45 to go on a three-pointer by Ward.

Samford took the lead at 49-47 with 9:03 left in the game on a three-pointer by Tish Pilkerton. Tennessee Tech, however, responded with a 14-0 run to take a 61-49 lead with 1:41 to go on a pair of free throws by Cavin. Tennessee Tech came away with the 63-51 win.

Samford returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 19, when the Bulldogs play at Morehead State. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. Central tip-off.
