Women's Hoops Drops Overtime Thriller To Austin Peay, 60-59

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Austin Peay's Ashley Haynes hit a layup with 1.1 seconds left in overtime to lift the Lady Govs basketball team to a 60-59 win over Samford Saturday at Seibert Hall.

Samford (14-5, 9-3 OVC) was led by Alex Munday with 15 points. Andrea Ward added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Haynes led Austin Peay (9-9, 6-5 OVC) with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Saundra Hale scored 13 points for the Lady Govs, while Breana Link, Kellea Reeves and Ashlee McGee added 10 points apiece.

The game was tight throughout the overtime with neither team leading by more than two points. With Samford trailing, 58-57, Munday hit a jumper with 18 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 59-58 lead and set up Haynes' game-winning shot.

In the first half, Austin Peay scored the first six points to grab an early 6-0 lead with 18:06 to go in the half. Samford came back to cut the lead to two at 8-6 following a layup by Tish Pilkerton. After Austin Peay pushed the lead back to six at 12-6, Samford went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:32 to go in the half after a free throw by Megan Wilderotter.

Samford took the lead for the first time at 18-16 with 4:54 remaining in the first half following a jumper by Cora Beth Smith. Samford took a 22-18 lead into halftime.

Samford maintained its lead through most of the second half, leading by as much as seven at 38-31 with 10:15 to go after a three-point play by Ward. Austin Peay then went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to two at 40-38 with 7:33 to go in the second half.

With Samford leading 45-43, Austin Peay scored five-straight points to take a 48-45 lead with 35 seconds to go. Samford trailed, 47-49 with nine seconds left, but Taryn Towns and Smith hit one-of-two free throws each to tie the score at 49-49 and send the game into overtime.

Samford will return to action on Monday, Jan. 30, when the Bulldogs play at Murray State at 5:15 p.m.
