The Samford football team earned its first Ohio Valley Conference win with a 33-7 victory at Murray State Saturday afternoon.
"It was a tremendous day and the Bulldogs took advantage of it," Samford head coach Bill Gray said. "We played in all three phases and did some things better than we have in weeks past. I'm just glad to see our guys take advantage of it and get an OVC win."
For Samford (3-4, 1-3 OVC), Marcus Rice rushed 19 times for 92 yards. Jeff Moore caught three passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Freddy Young caught six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Jefferson Adcock completed 10-of-19 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Adcock also rushed for 30 yards and two touchdowns.
After Samford recovered the opening kickoff at the Murray State 10-yard line, Adcock hit Young on a 15-yard touchdown with 13:59 to go in the first quarter. Shannon Fleming's extra point gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Adcock scored on a three-yard run with 2:55 to go in the opening quarter, and Fleming's PAT made the score 14-0. The score was set up when Samford's Sean Hill intercepted a Zach Barnard pass at the Murray State 48-yard line.
Early in the second quarter, MSU fumbled a Samford punt and the Bulldogs' recovered the ball at the MSU 45-yard line. Later in the drive, Adcock hit Moore on a 15-yard touchdown with 11:39 to go in the half. Fleming's PAT was blocked, giving Samford a 20-0 lead. Fleming added a 21-yard field goal with 3:30 to go in the second quarter to send Samford to halftime with a 23-0 lead.
Samford opened the scoring in the third quarter when Adcock scored on a one-yard run with 9:11 to go in the period. Fleming's PAT made the score 30-0.
Murray State got on the scoreboard when Ryne Salyer hit Ben Rush for a 15-yard touchdown with 12:28 to go in the game. The PAT by Gary Crass cut Samford's lead to 30-7. Fleming kicked a 31-yard field goal with 8:42 left in the game to make the final score 33-7.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when the Bulldogs play host to 17th-ranked Tennessee-Martin. The game is Samford's 2006 Homecoming contest, and is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
