Soccer To Host SEMO In Final OVC Regular-Season Match

Oct. 21, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The four-time Ohio Valley Conference champion Samford University soccer team will conclude its regular-season conference schedule Sunday against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks at 2 p.m., at Bulldog Field.

Samford (11-3-2, 6-0-2 OVC) clinched its fourth-consecutive OVC regular-season title Friday night with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Eastern Illinois. The Bulldogs' Sara Geiger scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute.

Since joining the OVC in 2003, Samford has compiled a remarkable 27-4-2 record against league opponents. The Bulldogs have captured the regular-season title in each of their four years in the conference.

Samford has won 14-consecutive matches against OVC opponents and has not been defeated by a league foe since Oct. 9, 2005.

Southeast Missouri (7-7-1, 4-3-1 OVC) heads into Sunday's match looking to rebound from a 2-0 defeat at Jacksonville State on Friday.

The loss snapped the Redhawks' three-match winning streak and dropped them into a two-way tie for third place in the conference standings. The top six teams in the final OVC standings will qualify for the conference tournament, with the top two seeds earning first-round byes.

Samford holds a 3-0-1 all-time record against Southeast Missouri.

Last season, the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 victory over the Redhawks on the road in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Samford's senior midfielder Kim Matthews scored a pair of goals in the key win.

The Samford University soccer team will attempt to extend its undefeated streak against conference opponents to 15-straight matches Sunday as the Bulldogs host the Southeast Missouri Redhawks at 2 p.m., at Bulldog Field.
