BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Eastern Kentucky's Josh Greco completed 18-of-28 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Colonels' football team to a 31-12 win at Samford Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Samford drops to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Eastern Kentucky, the preseason favorite to win the league, improves to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
"We didn't get it done today," Samford head coach Bill Gray said. "We played a pretty good football team and I did a poor job of having these guys ready to play. We just have to go back to the drawing board and continue to try to correct our mistakes."
For Samford, Jeff Moore caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Samford used three quarterbacks in the game. Dante Williams completed 5-of-12 passes for 60 yards, while Jefferson Adcock completed 5-of-12 passes for 39 yards. Alex Mortensen came in late in the fourth quarter and completed 3-of-5 passes for 47 yards and Samford's lone touchdown.
Samford got the scoring started with two field goals in the first quarter. Shannon Fleming kicked a 39-yarder with 11:50 to go in the first quarter and a 35-yard field goal with 6:17 left in the opening quarter for a 6-0 Samford lead.
Eastern Kentucky took the lead when Mark Dunn scored on a one-yard run with 9:52 to go in the half. Taylor Long's PAT gave the Colonels a 7-6 lead. EKU added another score when Greco hit Bobby Washington on a 36-yard touchdown with 6:01 left in the second quarter. The PAT made the score 14-6.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, EKU's Dunn scored on a one-yard run with 10:38 to go in the quarter, capping a 10-play, 78-yard drive for the Colonels. Long's PAT pushed the Colonels' lead to 21-6.
Greco hit Quinton Williams for a 73-yard touchdown with 13:49 to go in the fourth quarter, and Long's PAT gave EKU a 28-6 lead. Long kicked a 27-yard field goal with 6:58 to go in the game to push the Colonels' lead to 31-6.
Mortensen hit Moore for a 23-yard touchdown with 3:52 left in the game, and the two-point conversion failed to make the final score 31-12.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, when the Bulldogs play at Murray State. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff from Murray, Ky.
