Women's Basketball Drops OVC Contest At Murray State, 77-63

MURRAY, Ky. - The Samford women's basketball team fell at Murray State, 77-63, in an Ohio Valley Conference contest Sunday afternoon at the Regional Special Events Center.

Murray State (6-3, 3-0 OVC) shot 51.9 percent in the second half to Samford's (6-4, 1-1 OVC) 38.7 percent to pull away for the win. For the game, Samford shot 48.1 percent, while the Lady Racers hit 47.4 percent of their shots.

Samford was led by Alex Munday with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Taryn Towns scored 10 points and Veronica Pike added nine points for the Bulldogs.

Joi Scott led Murray State with 23 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Nichole Hayes scored 21 points for the Lady Racers, while Amber Guffey added 15 points.

In the first half, after Samford took the early 2-0 lead, Murray State jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Samford cut the lead to one at 9-8 with just over 12:00 to play on a basket by Munday. With the score tied at 18-18, Samford went on an 8-2 run to take a 26-20 lead on a three-pointer by Munday with 4:53 to play in the opening half.

MSU answered with a 9-0 run to take a 29-26 lead with 3:03 to play on a three-point play by Scott. Samford fought back to tie the score at 31-31 on a three-pointer by Towns with 1:53 to play, but the Lady Racers scored the final three points of the half to take a 34-31 advantage into halftime.

Samford took the lead early in the second half at 37-36 on three-pointers by Chelsee Insell and Munday. Murray State answered with an 8-0 run to take a 44-37 lead on a jumper by Shaleea Petty with 16:13 to go in the game. Samford cut the lead to two at 44-42 with 15:25 to go on a pair of free throws by Towns.

With Samford trailing, 47-45, Murray State went on a 17-4 run to push its lead to 64-49 with 8:56 to go on a free throw by Petty. The Lady Racers pushed their lead out to as much as 21 at 75-54 with 3:40 to go. Samford went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 12 at 75-63 with just under a minute to go on a layup by Megan Wilderotter, but the Bulldogs could get no closer as Murray State came away with the 77-63 win.

Samford will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 19, when the Bulldogs play at Southeast Missouri. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off from the Show Me Center.
