The Samford women's basketball team earned a key 60-57 victory over the Morehead State Lady Eagles Thursday night at Seibert Hall.
"Down the stretch, I thought, we played some really good basketball," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We made some defensive stops and executed down the stretch, and that was the difference in the game. We also only had eight turnovers, and when you do that, you'll have a chance to win the game."
Samford (17-7, 12-5 OVC) was led by Cora Beth Smith with 12 points. Alex Munday scored 11 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Chelsee Insell added nine points for the Bulldogs.
For Morehead State (12-12, 8-9 OVC), Jessie Plante scored 13 points, and LaKrisha Brown scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Megen Gearhart added 10 points for the Lady Eagles.
Samford fell behind early as Morehead State jumped out to a 5-0 lead with 18:41 to go in the first half. Samford fought back and took its first lead of the game at 12-10 with 12:41 to go in the half on a jumper by Veronica Pike. Morehead State retook the lead at 18-17 with 8:06 to go in the half following a three-pointer by Gearhart.
Morehead State led by as many as five points in the first half at 26-21. However, with MSU leading, 31-27, Samford finished the half with a 7-0 run to take a 34-31 lead into halftime.
Morehead State outscored Samford, 6-2 to open the second half to take a 37-36 lead with 17:19 to go in the game. With Morehead State leading 43-41, Samford went on a 13-2 run to take a 54-45 lead with 7:52 to go in the game following a jumper by Pike.
The Lady Eagles cut the Samford lead to two at 57-55 with just under a minute to play, but a layup and free throw by Taryn Towns helped secure the 60-57 win for the Bulldogs.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the Bulldogs play host to Eastern Kentucky on Senior Night for Samford's two seniors, Cora Beth Smith and Andrea Ward. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off from Seibert Hall.
