Luke Peavy went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI to lead the Samford baseball team to an 8-5 win over Montevallo Friday night.
Following Peavy for Samford (4-2), Louis Rojas went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Trey Moody went 2-for-4 in the game, and Parker Gargis drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Doug Denson (1-0) earned the win on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings in relief, giving up no earned runs on three hits. Phillip Whitten pitched the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.
For Montevallo (6-5), Daniel Furuto went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Brantly Clay also went 3-for-5 for the Falcons. Jeremy Joyce gave up six runs on four hits to take the loss for Montevallo.
Samford did most of its damage in the bottom of the first inning when the Bulldogs plated six runs to take an early 6-0 lead. Garrett Rice walked with the bases loaded to bring in John Morgan for the game's first run. Gargis singled to drive in Bear Burnett and Rojas for a 3-0 Samford lead. Peavy then homered with Gargis and Rice on base to give Samford the six-run lead.
Samford made the score 7-0 in the second inning when Rojas singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Moody. Montevallo put its first run on the board in the top of the third to cut the Samford lead to 7-1. Francisco Perez grounded out to shortstop to drive in B.J. Holloway for the Falcons' first run of the game.
Samford pushed its lead to 8-1 with a run in the bottom of the third. Peavy doubled to drive in Matt Alling for the Bulldogs' final run of the game.
Montevallo came back with three runs in the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 8-4. Furuto doubled to right-center field to drive in Clay and Millard Dawson for the first two runs of the inning. Daniel Tankersley then singled to drive in Furuto to make the score 8-4.
The Falcons added one final run in the seventh inning to make the final score 8-5. Perez scored the game's final run on a passed ball.
Samford and Montevallo will meet again Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
