Softball Drops Two Games At Stetson Tournament

DELAND, Fla. - The Samford softball team dropped two games at the Stetson University Invitational Tournament Saturday at the Stetson University Softball Field. The Bulldogs fell to Stetson, 4-0, and to UCF by a score of 4-2.

In the loss to Stetson, Samford was led by Liz Pearse and Bethany Weisser, each going 1-for-3 at the plate. Stephanie Royall took the loss on the mound for Samford, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits.

For Stetson, Melissa Wiggins went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Shawna Wiggs was 4-for-4 at the plate for the Hatters. Erica Demers pitched the complete game, giving up two hits to pick up the win for Stetson.

Stetson plated a run in the first inning and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Hatters scored the game's final two runs in the fifth inning to make the final score 4-0.

Against UCF, Pearse, Jessica Owens and Kylie Harmon collecting one hit each to lead Samford at the plate. Emilee Lewis pitched 4.2 innings, giving up no earned runs on four hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.

For the Golden Knights, Breanne Javier drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Shelly Frick went 3-for-4 with an RBI for UCF. Allison Kime pitched the complete 7.0 innings to pick up the win for the Golden Knights.

Samford jumped on top early against UCF with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Golden Knights plated four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Samford will continue play in the Stetson University Invitational Tournament on Sunday. The Bulldogs will take on Winthrop at 11:00 a.m.
