The Samford University softball team finished the weekend with a 6-0 win over the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday in the Stetson University Invitational Tournament. The Bulldogs rapped 10 hits in the finale to produce six runs.
Samford (5-10) will return to action on Wednesday in Starkville, Miss., with a doubleheader against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs will then return home on Thursday to face Drake at 4 p.m.
Junior Jenna Depski led off the third inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katie England. Dempski then scored from second when Jessica Owens singled and Winthrop's shortstop committed a throwing error.
In the top of the fourth inning, junior Shelley Stanley tripled to right field before Emily Deaux executed a successful squeeze bunt to bring home pinch runner Rachael Reeves. Deaux later scored on another squeeze bunt by Dempski and Kylie Harmon scored on a sacrifice fly by England.
Senior captain Erin Hall crossed the plate for Samford's fifth run of the game in the fifth inning on a single from Stanley. Meghan Wagner picked up an RBI in the sixth frame as she singled to score England who earlier doubled in the inning.
Stanley went 3-for-4 with a triple to lead Samford offensively.
Freshman pitcher Stephanie Royall started for Samford and earned the win to improve to 2-3 on the season. She scattered four hits and struck out seven batters.
The Samford University softball team will next be in action on Wednesday as the Bulldogs head to Starkville, Miss., for a non-conference doubleheader against Mississippi State. The contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
