BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep over the University of North Alabama Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Lakeshore Foundation.
"There were very tough playing conditions today because it was so cold and windy, but the girls came out energized and ready to play and came out victorious," said Samford head coach Terri Sisk. "It was a great match and a great way to start the season. We're looking forward to playing Jacksonville State on Wednesday."
Samford started the afternoon by winning the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep over North Alabama.
In the No. 1 doubles spot, Emily White and Sarah McKey defeated Lori Colby and Jennifer Miller, 8-6. Katie McMiller and Anna Jackson won in the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-2, over Fernanda Oliveira and Emilie Tordjiman. Whitnie Warren and Christie Baker defeated Arrie Morre and Yuliya Zelenskaya, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles spot for the sweep.
In singles play, Jackson claimed the No. 1 singles point with a thrilling 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-6 win over Zelenskaya. McMiller defeated Colby, 6-2, 6-3, for the No. 2 singles point and White won, 6-2, 6-0, over Oliveira for the No. 3 singles point.
Warren earned the No. 4 singles point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tordjiman and McKey defeated Miller, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the No. 5 point. Amber Dyar sealed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Moore for the No. 6 singles point.
The Samford University women's tennis team returns to action Wednesday, when it heads to Jacksonville Ala., to meet Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State.
