BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team won its home opener on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of North Alabama, 6-1, at the Lakeshore Foundation.

"I feel like the team rebounded well from a tough loss at Memphis," said Samford head coach Kemper Baker. We set the tone early today with a really strong performance in doubles and followed up with some solid singles play against a really tough North Alabama team. Hopefully we can carry the same intensity we showed today into Auburn tomorrow and compete well there."

The Bulldogs began the day with a 3-0 sweep for the doubles point. Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira won 8-3 over Guilherme Fonseca and Bruno Zuleta on the No. 1 court, and Stuart Misner and Hank Grant defeated Wolfgang Weber and Bebo Dutton on the No. 2 court. Johnny Griffee and James Bryce won the No. 3 match to seal the sweep, defeating Alfredo Krywacz and Wilton Atkins, 8-7.

Samford continued its strong play, wining 5-1 in singles play.

Misner won the No. 1 singles point, defeating Fonseca, 6-4, 6-3. On the No. 3 court, Grant won, 6-2, 6-3, over Krywacz and Silveira claimed the No. 4 singles point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Weber.

Manuel Miletic won, 7-6, 6-0, over Dutton on the No. 5 court. Griffee claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Atkins to win the No. 6 singles point. Zuleta earned the No. 2 singles point with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Weaver.

The Samford University men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday when it heads to Auburn, Ala., to take on the Auburn Tigers.
