AUBURN, Ala. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Auburn on Sunday afternoon in Auburn, Ala.
The Bulldogs dropped the match 6-1 to an Auburn team that is currently ranked 28th in the nation.
"The team got off to a slow start in doubles play and missed the opportunity to grab the doubles point," said Samford head coach Kemper Baker. "It's really hard to come back against a team as strong as Auburn. We had some really competitive singles matches, which is encouraging as we head into our first conference match against Jacksonville State."
Auburn claimed the doubles point after Robber Lathouwers and Lukas Marsoun defeated Renan Silveira and Bradley Weaver, 8-3, in the No. 1 doubles spot and Pawel Dilaj and Milan Krnjetin won, 8-4, over the tandem of Johnny Griffee and James Bryce on the No. 3 court.
Manuel Miletic earned Samford's point at the No. 5 singles spot, defeating Krnjetin in a thrilling 5-7, 7-6, 10-7 match. On the No. 1 singles court Stuart Misner dropped a close 6-3, 6-4 match to Lathouwers, and Silveira fell, 7-5, 6-3, to Lukas Marsoun in an exciting match on the No. 4 singles court.
Weaver dropped the No. 2 singles point to Nick Lane, 6-3, 6-0, and Hank Grant fell, 6-3, 6-2, to Dilaj on the No. 3 court. Griffee lost the No. 6 point to Terence Nugent, 6-2, 6-3.
The Samford University men's tennis team is set to return to action on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., when it takes on Jacksonville State in its first Ohio Valley Conference match of the season.
