The Samford baseball team fell behind early and could not catch up as the Bulldogs fell to the UAB Blazers, 10-5, Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford (6-3) was led at the plate by Parker Gargis, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Michael Marseco and Louis Rojas drove in a run each for the Bulldogs. Chandler Tidwell (0-1) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits to take the loss for Samford.
For UAB (5-3), Grant Addison (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief to pick up the win on the mound. Randy Mills started the game for the Blazers and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits. Danny Sawyer went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Ryne Lovdahl went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Blazers at the plate.
UAB plated three runs in the first inning and four in the second to jump out to a 7-2 lead after the first two innings. Sawyer, Billy Lichtner and Lovdahl drove in a run each for UAB in the first inning. In the second inning, John Wayne Donahue and Sawyer drove in a run each, while Lovdahl drove in two runs.
Samford's two runs in the bottom of the first inning were scored when Gargis doubled to drive in Rojas and John Morgan.
After UAB made the score 9-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, Samford came back with a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-5. Rojas grounded out to drive in Marseco for the run in the fifth. In the sixth, Matt Alling doubled to drive in Gargis for the first run of the inning. Marseco later grounded out to second base to score Alling to cut the UAB lead to four runs.
The Blazers added one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 10-5. Levi Patmon singled to drive in Jorge Gutierrez for the game's final run.
Samford will return to action on Friday when the Bulldogs play at South Alabama at 6:00 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series.
