BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams swept intra-state rival Alabama A&M on Friday afternoon at the Lakeshore Foundation, in Birmingham, Ala. Both the men's and women's teams won 7-0 to defeat non-conference foe Alabama A&M.
The Samford men (5-3, 2-0 OVC) claimed a 7-0 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (4-6, 3-1 SWAC). Samford gained the early momentum, winning the doubles point and never gave it up, claiming all six singles points.
"I'm happy with the intensity that the team showed today," said Samford men's head coach Kemper Baker. "They created a great environment and we're going to try to take it up another level for tomorrow's match against Tennessee-Martin."
On the No. 1 doubles court, Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira claimed an 8-2 win over Willis Mbandi and Sammy Muriuki. Stuart Misner and Hank Grant defeated Shingirayi Nyagura and Adande Piggott, 8-3, on the No. 2 court and James Bryce and Johnny Griffee picked up an 8-2 win over Arda Kaytan and Robert James on the No. 3 court for the doubles sweep.
Silveira picked up the No. 1 singles point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mbandi, and Grant won, 6-1, 6-1 over Muriuki on the No. 2 court. On the No. 3 court, Misner won, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, over Niyagura, and Weaver won the No. 4 point, defeating Kaytan, 6-3, 6-0. Griffee claimed the No. 5 point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Piggott and Brian Dushock won, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 6 court to defeat Cardinas Campbell.
The Samford women (5-2, 2-0 OVC) won, 7-0, over Alabama A&M (8-4, 4-0 SWAC) on Friday. The Bulldogs quickly swept the doubles point, before claiming all six singles points as well.
In doubles play, Whitnie Warren and Christie Baker earned a decisive 8-0 victory on the No. 3 court, against Brittany Woodgett and partner Kimberly Hardin. Katie McMiller and Anna Jackson claimed an 8-2 win over Regina Jones and Shaniek Pinder, and Emily White and Sarah McKey won, 8-4, on the No. 1 court over Charlene Tsangamwe and Batsirai Bvunzawabaya.
In singles play, Jackson, won 6-2, 6-0, on the No. 1 court, to defeat Tsangamwe. On the No. 2 court, McMiller won, 6-3, 6-2, over Pinder, and White claimed the No. 3 point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jones. On the No. 4 court Warren defeated Bvunzawabaya, 6-1, 6-1, and McKey defeated Hardin, 6-0, 6-1, to claim the No. 5 point. Amber Dyar capped off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Woodgett on the No. 6 court.
