Tennis Sweeps Austin Peay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams each claimed 7-0 victories of Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay on Thursday afternoon at the Lakeshore Foundations.

The Samford women (7-3, 4-1 OVC) defeated the Lady Govs (3-6, 0-2 OVC), 7-0, for their second-consecutive 7-0 win, as they beat OVC foe Jacksonville State by the same score on Wednesday. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick start, gaining the doubles point, before claiming all six singles points.

In doubles play Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller picked up an 8-1 victory over Jessica Hawk and Isabel Rzezniczek on the No. 1 court. On the No. 2 court, Christie Baker and Whitnie Warren won, 8-3, over MaKenzie Kurth and Elizabeth Welpley and Amber Dyar and Bethany Benson defeated Alana Carere and Virginia Penner, 8-6, on the No. 3 court.

In singles play, Jackson earned the No. 1 point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kurth, and McMiller defeated Hawk, 6-0, 6-1, for the No. 2 point. Emily White won, 6-3, 6-2, on the No. 3 court over Rzezniczek, while Warren defeated Carere, 6-1, 6-0, on the No. 4 court. On the No. 5 court, Benson claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kurth, and Dyar completed the sweep on the No. 6 court, winning, 6-1, 6-0 over Penner.

The Samford men (7-4, 4-1 OVC) also defeated Austin Peay (3-10, 0-2 OVC) by a score of 7-0, bouncing back from a tough 4-3 loss to Jacksonville State on Wednesday. The men won the doubles point quickly, before moving to win all six singles points.

"I feel like the team responded well today after a difficult loss to Jacksonville State," said Samford men's head coach Kemper Baker. "They showed a lot of intensity today and defeated a difficult Austin Peay team. Now we're going to take some time and get everyone rested and healthy before taking on Southern Miss and Alcorn State."

Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira got the Bulldogs started with an 8-6 win over Ankur Singla and Andrew Naidu on the No. 1 doubles court. On the No. 2 court Stuart Misner and Hank Grant claimed a thrilling 9-7 victory over Lucas deBrito and Patrick Puertolas, and James Bryce and Johnny Griffee won, 8-4, over Alex Angelatos and Sean Hawk on the No. 3 court.

In singles play, Grant claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Naidu on the No. 2 court, and Misner won, 7-5, 6-2 on the No. 3 court over deBrito. Silveira sealed the win for the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Singla on the No. 1 court. Bradley Weaver captured the No. 4 point, beating Puertolas, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5 and Griffee picked up the No. 5 point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Angelatos. Eric Stephens sealed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hawk on the No. 6 court.

The Samford women return to action on March 26, when the head to Greenville, S.C., to take on Furman, while the men will take on Southern Miss on March 25 in Brookhaven, Miss.
