Track And Field's Blankenship And Brewer Shine At Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field team completed day two of the Alabama Relays, hosted by the University of Alabama on Friday. Three Bulldogs competed in two events on Friday, turning in impressive performances.

Lauren Blankenship won the women's 10,000 meters, running as an unattached athlete. Blankenship shattered the Samford record in the event, posting a time of 35:28.05. Michelle Brewer finished fifth overall in the 10,000 meters and fourth among collegiate athletes, as Blankenship competed as an unattached athlete. Brewer turned in a time of 38:11.09.

"Lauren ran exceedingly well, especially since it was so warm and windy today," said Samford head coach Glenn McWaters. "She's in very good shape and we're happy with what she did. We're really pleased with Michelle as well, especially since this was the first time either of them had run a 10,000."

Laura Malnati held her eighth-place position in the heptathlon. Malnati ended the competition with a total of 4,121 points. The Samford junior finished fourth in the javelin throw, with a distance of 101'09''. Malnati finished ninth in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:39.36 and 12th in the long jump with a leap of 15'09 1/2''.

The Alabama Relays continue on Saturday at the Sam Bailey Track on the University of Alabama campus. The first event is set to begin at 8 a.m. and the meet concludes with the men's 400 meters at 5:25 p.m. Live results will be posted on www.cfpitiming.com.
