Baseball Scores Season-High 13 Runs In Win Over Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. -Samford freshman David Knapp pitched 7.0 shutout innings, striking out a career-high eight batters and walking none to lead Samford to a 13-0 win at Arkansas State Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

For Samford (9-10) at the plate, Parker Gargis went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Michael Marseco went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Drew Reagan, Garrett Rice and Bear Burnett had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

Knapp improved his record to 2-1 with the win. The shutout marks the first time Samford has shutout an opponent since May 14, 2005, when the Bulldogs claimed an 8-0 win at Tennessee-Martin.

Arkansas State (11-10) was led by Brett Kinning, going 2-for-4 and Todd Boucher, going 2-for-3 at the plate. T.J. Brewer (1-2) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on one hit and walking five batters to take the loss for the Indians.

Samford grabbed an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and another in the third inning. Trey Moody walked with the bases loaded for the game's first run, and Benji Waite grounded out to drive in Burnett for a 2-0 Samford lead. The run in the third inning was scored when Luke Peavy doubled to drive in Rice to make the score 3-0.

The Bulldogs plated two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to increase their lead to 8-0. Rice and Burnett drove in the two runs in the fifth inning. Gargis hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning for an eight-run Samford lead.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth to make the final score 13-0. Gargis drove in the first run in the eighth, and then scored the second run on a wild pitch. In the ninth inning, Marseco, Kyle Krebs and Bill Whitehead drove in a run each for the game's final three runs.
