CALERA, Ala. ---- The Samford University women's golf team concluded the 2006 Samford University Women's Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Timberline Golf Course on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finished tied for eighth of 15 teams in the 36-hole tournament.
Samford shot a combined score of 654, which was 86 over par. The Bulldogs showed steady play, shooting a combined 327 in both rounds. Birmingham-Southern won the tournament, with a combined score of 602 (+34) and Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State finished second, shooting a 616 (+48). McNeese rounded out the top-three teams, shooting a 626 to finish third.
Courtney Warr highlighted the tournament for the Bulldogs, finishing in a tie for 12th place after shooting a combined 155 (+13). Warr shot a career-best 73 in the first round, which concluded on Tuesday after play was suspended on Monday due to inclement weather.
"I was very pleased to get the tournament in," said Samford head coach Ian Thompson. "We played in all kinds of weather conditions. I was also very happy to see Courtney Warr's breakout performance today. The rest of the team struggled, which highlighted her performance even more. I wish she would have finished in the top-10, but it was good to see her play to her full potential."
Kelly Stout and Maria Troche turned in the next highest finishes for the Bulldogs, as both tied for 37th with combined scores of 164. Stout shot an 86 in round one, and improved to a 78 in round two, while Troche shot an 81 in round one and an 83 in round two.
"Kelly had a good comeback in the second round today," Thompson said. "She had a tough first round, but she came back played the way she usually does. Maria had an off tournament, but I was pleased with the team as a whole. This was a pretty solid field and we finished at around the middle of the pack. I would have liked for us to finish a little higher, but I'm satisfied with where we finished."
Birmingham-Southern's Emily Klein won the individual competition, shooting a combined 147 (+5). Klein shot a 75 in the first round and came back to shoot a one-over-par 72 in round two. Additionally, McNeese State's Hannah Bagwell provided a highlight of the tournament, shooting a hole-in-one on the No. 7 hole.
The Bulldogs return to action on April 10, when they head to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the 2006 Lady Eagle Invitational, hosted by Southern Miss.
