Baseball Falls To Mercer, 4-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Mercer Bears Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford (9-12) was led at the plate by John Morgan, going 3-for-4. Chandler Tidwell pitched 6.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits to take the loss for Samford. Tidwell struck out eight batters in the contest.

For Mercer (17-10), Mike Armstrong went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Mark Jarvis also drove in a run for the Bears. Blake Quarles pitched 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit to pick up the win. Andrew Urena got the final out of the game to earn the save for the Bears.

Mercer plated three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Eric Renfroe scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Jarvis then singled to drive in Josh Thompson to make the score 2-0. Billy Shaughnessy scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Mercer put its final run on the board in the third inning when Armstrong led the inning off with a solo home run to left field.

For the game, Samford left 13 men on base. The Bulldogs out-hit the Bears, 8-3.

Samford will open Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Murray State. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., and a single game on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
