GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team is in second place after day one of the 37th annual Furman Intercollegiate, at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, N.C.
The Bulldogs shot a combined score of 294 in the first round of the three-day tournament. Currently, Maryland is in first place in the 18-team tournament, after firing a 289. Wofford and host Furman are tied for third, after shooting a 295, and Tennessee-Chattanooga rounds out the top-five, with a combined score of 296.
"The course up here is hard, but I'm pleased with our position," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "This is a competitive tournament, and I'm excited that we're only five strokes back of Maryland, who is a very good team. I'm looking forward to seeing what my guys can do and what will happen in the rest of the tournament."
Nathan Turner leads the Bulldogs, after shooting for par, with a 72 to tie for 10th place. Reed Davis is just behind him, tied for 16th place, after shooting 73, and Ryan Mayberry fired a 74 to finish tied for 25th. Andrew Villarreal, who shot a 75, is currently tied for 34th and Bradley Pate is tied for 46th after firing a 76.
The 37th annual Furman Intercollegiate continues on Saturday, with the Bulldogs set to tee off at 8:50 a.m. Results will be posted at www.furmanpaladins.com.
