BROOKHAVEN, Miss. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team claimed a decisive 6-1 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday, in Brookhaven, Miss. The Bulldogs bounced back from a difficult loss to Southern Miss on Saturday to pick up the win and improve to 8-5 on the season.
"The team did an excellent job rebounding today after a disappointing loss to Southern Miss," said Samford head coach Kemper Baker. "The biggest factor leading to their improved performance was their challenging one another to up their intensity and competitiveness."
Samford jumped out quickly, claiming the doubles point. Renan Silveira and Bradley Weaver defeated Shashank Kulkarni and Juan Marcos Hernandez, 8-6, on the No. 1 court. Stuart Misner and Hank Grant won, 8-5, over Abhaya Prakash and Azia Abdurazzakov on the No. 2 court, and James Bryce and Johnny Griffee defeated Maxim Rhazmakin and Fedor Khrushchev on the No. 3 court, 8-3.
In singles play, Silveira claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Prakash on the No. 1 court. Grant won the No. 2 point over Abdurazzakov, 6-1, 6-1, and Misner won the No. 3 point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kulkarni. On the No. 5 court, Eric Stephens won, 6-1, 6-0, over Rhazmakin and Jason Thomas claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Khrushchev on the No. 6 court.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, April 2, when they take on Tennessee Tech at noon at the Lakeshore Foundation.
