BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams defeated Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Ala.
The men's team won 5-2 over the Colonels. The Bulldogs swept the doubles point to gain the early momentum in the match, before winning four of six matches. Renan Silveira's win on the No. 4 court clinched the match for Samford.
The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Bradley Weaver and Silveira won on the No. 1 court, defeating Lars Gratzki and Mario Simic, 8-4. On the No. 2 court, Stuart Misner and Hank Grant claimed an 8-6 victory over Tom Wospil and Nic Brenner; and, James Bryce and Johnny Griffee won, 8-6, over Frederico Goncalves and Vazim Ivanis on the No. 3 court.
In singles play, Grant claimed the No. 2 singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wospil, and Misner won the No. 3 point after defeating Mel Segota 6-2, 7-5. Silveira's 6-1, 6-2 win over Ivanis sealed the victory for the Bulldogs. Griffee won, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5, over Goncalves on the No. 5 court.
On the women's side, Samford won 6-1 over Eastern Kentucky. The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point, winning two of the three matches, and went on to win five of six singles matches.
"The girls showed so much intensity and fight today," said Samford head women's coach Terri Sisk. "They are showing more and more every day that they are contenders for this conference title."
In doubles play Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller claimed an 8-4 victory over Meredith Giles and Jemma Euers on the No. 2 court. On the No. 3 court, Christie Baker and Whitnie Warren won, 8-1, over Terin Roof and Kim Underdonk.
McMiller won the No. 2 singles point, with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory over Durcakova. On the No. 3 court, White won, 6-3, 6-1, over Vojkova; and, Warren won over Euers on the No. 4 court, 6-3, 7-6. McKey claimed the No. 5 point, winning, 6-0, 6-2, over Roof, and Amber Dyar defeated Underdonk, 6-0, 6-1 on the No. 6 court.
The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams return to action on Friday, March 10, when they play host to Alabama A&M at the Lakeshore Foundation, at 2 p.m.
