Baseball Drops Home Game To Lipscomb

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team fell, 7-1, to Lipscomb Tuesday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Luke Peavy drove in Samford's lone run of the game in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. David Knapp, earning his first collegiate start, took the loss for Samford, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits.

Ryan Mitchell went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead Lipscomb at the plate. Justin Sanders and Jeff Baumgartner drove in two runs each for Lipscomb. Robby Smithson earned the win for Lipscomb, pitching 6.1 innings, surrendering one run on four hits. Charles Williams pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

Lipscomb took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Sanders doubled to right-center field to drive in Zac Miller and Mitchell for the first two runs of the game.

The Bisons added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 4-0. Baumgartner hit a bunt single to drive in Miller to make the score 3-0. Lipscomb made the score 4-0 when Patrick O'Rourke hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Ryan Price.

Samford cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the seventh inning. Peavy reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Parker Gargis, who led the inning off with a walk for Samford's lone run of the game.

Lipscomb added three runs in the ninth inning to make the final score 7-1. Mitchell, Price and Baumgartner drove in the final three runs of the game for the Bisons.

With the loss, Samford drops to 6-7 on the season, while Lipscomb improves to 6-6 on the year.

Samford will return to action on Saturday when the Bulldogs play host to Longwood in a doubleheader. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
