COOKEVILLE, Tenn. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team fell to Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon in Cookeville, Tenn. Rainy weather forced the teams to relocate the match to Tennessee Tech's indoor facilities, but the teams were able to complete the match.
The Bulldogs (8-6, 4-2 OVC) dropped the match, 5-2, to the Golden Eagles (9-9, 4-0 OVC), who remain unbeaten in the conference, following consecutive wins over Jacksonville State on Saturday and Samford on Sunday.
Tennessee Tech jumped out quickly, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Stuart Misner and Hank Grant claimed a 9-8 win over Juan Carlos Rabaza and Will Chappell on the No. 2 court, but the Golden Eagles won on the No. 1 court and the No. 3 court.
Samford won two of the singles points, but the Golden Eagles were able to win the other four, as the 4, 5 and 6 positions decided the match. Renan Silveira helped the Bulldogs start off on a high note, winning, 6-4, 6-1, on the No. 1, over Shunsuke Shimizu. Misner tied the match at 2-2, with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Tiago Gilioli on the No. 3 court. Tennessee Tech went on to win on the last three courts to seal the match.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 4, when they take on Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m. Results will be posted at www.samfordsports.com following the conclusion of the match.
