Tennis Sweeps Conference Foe, Eastern Illinois

MURRAY, Ky. ---- The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams defeated Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday in Murray, Ky.

The Samford women ended their stretch of four matches in five days with a win, claiming three of the four matches. The Bulldogs (11-5, 7-2 OVC) bounced back from a difficult 4-3 loss to Murray State on Friday, to defeat the Panthers (4-13, 1-6 OVC), 7-0, on Saturday. Samford quickly gained the momentum in the match by winning the doubles point, and then proceeded to win all six singles points.

The tandem of Emily White and Sarah McKey claimed a thrilling 9-7 victory over Madina Mambetov and Jill Wirtz on the No. 1 doubles court. At No. 2 doubles, Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller earned a hard-fought 9-7 win over Sandra Sasidharan and Stephanie Harmazy. The Samford duo of Whitnie Warren and Christie Baker downed Christina Carrillo and Sam Lininger, 8-1, on the No. 3 court.

In singles play, Jackson defeated Sasidharan in an exciting 7-5, 6-3 match on the No. 1 court, and McMiller picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mambetova on the No. 2 court. White claimed the No. 3 point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Harmazy, while Warren won the No. 4 point, defeating Wirtz, 6-0, 6-1. McKey won, 6-1, 6-0, over Lininger on the No. 5 court, and Bethany Benson claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Carrillo on the No. 6 court.

The Samford (10-7, 6-2 OVC) men came back from a late win over Murray State on Friday night to beat Eastern Illinois (4-13, 2-5 OVC) on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, and proceeded to win four of the six singles points, for a 5-2 win over the Panthers.

In doubles action, Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira claimed an 8-4 win over Charles Levaque and Brandon Lenfert on the No. 1 court. On the No. 2 court, Stuart Misner and Hank Grant defeated Chris Thomas and Sean Bush, 8-1, and the team of James Bryce and Johnny Griffee won, 8-3, over Vuk Milicevic and Jordan Nestrud on the No. 3 court.

In singles play, Grant downed Milicevic, 6-0, 6-0, for the No. 1 point, and Misner picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lenfert for the No. 3 point. Weaver defeated Thomas, 6-2, 6-1, on the No. 4 singles court, and Griffee won, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, on the No. 6 court, defeating Nestrud.

The Samford men and women return to action on Monday, April 10, when they head to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Tennessee State in their final OVC matches of the regular season. Results will be posted at www.samfordsports.com following the conclusion of the matches.
