Baseball Takes 11-5 Win Over SEMO In OVC Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team fell behind 4-0 early, but came from behind for an 11-5 win over Southeast Missouri Thursday night at the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at Brooks Stadium.

"What an awesome job by our kids tonight," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "SEMO came out and got after us early and did a great job early. It was a great game all around for our guys. I couldn't be prouder of our guys."

With the win, Samford (33-23) advances to play Jacksonville State Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.al.com/wvsu or www.samfordsports.com.

For Samford in the game, Parker Gargis, John Morgan and Louis Rojas each homered. Josh Ehmke overcame a slow start to earn the win on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and striking out 11 batters.

SEMO was led by Levi Olson, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Phillip Riley took the loss on the mound, tossing a third of an inning, giving up six runs on four hits.

After falling behind, 4-0, in the first inning Samford plated six runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take a 9-4 lead.

In the first inning, Morgan doubled to drive in Michael Marseco, who led the inning off with a double, for Samford's first run of the game. After Matt Alling walked, Gargis hit a three-run home run to left-center field to tie the score at 4-4. Luke Peavy later doubled to drive in Garrett Rice and Bear Burnett for a 6-4 Samford lead.

Samford's first run in the second inning was scored when Rice doubled to drive in Morgan to make the score 7-4. Burnett then singled up the middle to drive in Gargis and Rice for a 9-4 Samford lead.

The Bulldogs added a run in the fourth inning to push their lead to 10-4. Rojas led the inning off with a home run to right-center field for a six-run Samford lead.

SEMO scored a run in the top of the seventh to cut the Samford lead to 10-5. Olson doubled to drive in Brent Lawson for the run.

Samford answered in the bottom of the seventh with one run to make the final score 11-5. Morgan hit a home run to left field for the final run of the game.
