CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --The Samford football team fell behind, 19-0 at halftime, and its second-half comeback fell just short as the Bulldogs dropped a 19-14 decision at Southeast Missouri Saturday night.
For Samford (2-3, 0-2 OVC), Dante Williams completed 12-of-22 passes for 79 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. Jeff Moore caught seven passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Brock Johnson rushed seven times for 56 yards and his first collegiate touchdown.
Southeast Missouri got on the scoreboard first when Kevin Ballatore hit Stevelan Harper on a seven-yard touchdown pass with 4:40 to go in the first quarter. Colin Schermann's PAT gave SEMO a 7-0 lead.
SEMO struck again when Markus Mosley hit Samora Goodson on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 13:35 to go in the second quarter. The PAT was blocked, making the score 13-0. SEMO's Tony Anderson scored on a seven-yard run with 4:35 to go in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was no good and SEMO held a 19-0 lead.
Samford opened the scoring in the third quarter when Williams connected with Moore on a six-yard touchdown pass with 8:34 to go in the third quarter. Shannon Fleming's PAT cut the SEMO lead to 19-7.
Johnson scored his first career touchdown on an eight-yard run with 12:42 to go in the fourth quarter. Fleming's PAT made the final score 19-14.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when the bulldogs play host to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
