Insell Leads Women's Basketball Past Eastern Kentucky, 59-56

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Chelsee Insell scored 23 points to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 59-56 win over Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Seibert Hall.

"I was very pleased with our effort down the stretch," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We hit a spot for about five or six minutes where we weren't very good, but we didn't let that cost us the game."

Behind Insell for Samford (10-9, 5-5 OVC), Veronica Pike posted a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

For Eastern Kentucky (7-12, 4-6 OVC), Crystal Jones scored 18 points. Ashley Cazee scored 13 points and Andrea Jenkins added 12 points for the Lady Colonels.

Eastern Kentucky jumped out to an early 6-3 lead with 16:34 to go in the first half. Samford then went on a 9-4 run to take a 12-10 lead with 12:50 to go after a jumper by Karmen Smith.

Veronica Pike scored 11 points and pulled down 13 rebounds Saturday against Eastern Kentucky.


With the game tied, 20-20, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 28-20 lead with 2:55 to go in the half after a pair of free throws by Pike. Samford pushed its lead out to 10 at 32-22 with 1:28 to go after a jumper by Pike. A three-point play by EKU's Cazee made the score 32-25 heading into halftime.

Samford pushed its lead back out to 10 early in the second half at 35-25 with 18:49 to go in the game following a three-pointer by Megan Wilderotter. After EKU cut the lead to five at 35-30, Samford went on a 6-0 run to push its lead to 41-30 with 14:33 to go after a jumper by Insell.

With Samford leading, 46-34, EKU went on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 48-48 with 4:48 to go after layup by Crystal Jones. Samford then scored the next five points to take a 53-48 with 3:15 to go in the game after a three-pointer by Insell.

Eastern Kentucky then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 54-53 with 1:23 to go in the game. Insell then hit a three-pointer and later two free throws to give Samford a 58-54 lead. After EKU cut the lead to two at 58-56, Smith hit a late free throw to make the final score 59-56.

Samford will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 25, when the Bulldogs play at Tennessee-Martin. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
