BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University soccer team will conclude its two-match road swing Sunday against the Morehead State Eagles. The Ohio Valley Conference foes are scheduled to square off at 1 p.m., at Jayne Stadium.
Samford (9-3, 4-0 OVC) heads into the contest riding the positive momentum of a five-match winning streak. The Bulldogs have jumped out to an undefeated 4-0 conference record for the first time since 2004. Samford would earn a school-record 5-0 mark with a win against Morehead State (3-8, 2-3 OVC) on Sunday.
Since beginning OVC play Sept. 28, Samford has rattled off consecutive wins against Tennessee-Martin 3-0, Murray State 2-1, Jacksonville State 4-0 and Eastern Kentucky 3-1. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 15 in the talent-laden Southeast Region.
In Samford's decisive 3-1 victory against Eastern Kentucky on Friday, true freshman Lauren Cook paced the Bulldogs' offensive attack with two first-half goals.
A native of Conyers, Ga., Cook has already scored nine goals this year and leads the OVC. Samford's single-season record for goals is 11 and was set by former Bulldog-great Marian Wagner in 2002.
Morehead State enters Sunday's matchup with a full head of steam after posting a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Jacksonville State on Friday. The Eagles' Kimmie Beiting scored the game-winning goal during the 11th minute of play, her first of the 2007 campaign.
Senior Rebekah Kendall, Morehead State's lightning-quick All-OVC performer, spearheads the Eagles' offensive attack and has scored four goals this season. She leads the team with nine points, 48 shot attempts and 17 shots on goal.
Freshman forward Erin Adams is ranked second on the team with 16 shot attempts and seven shots on goal.
Last season, Samford defeated Morehead State 3-0 in Birmingham. The Bulldogs hold a 4-0 advantage in the rivalry. Samford has never allowed a goal against Morehead State and the Bulldogs have outscored the Eagles 11-0 in the previous four meetings.
So far this season, Samford has outscored its opponents 23-11. Morehead State has been outscored 9-23.
Following Samford's OVC matchup versus Morehead State on Sunday, the Bulldogs will return home to Birmingham for a two-match homestand against both Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay.
