Record Performances Lead Football Past Tennessee Tech, 59-52

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Jefferson Adcock threw for a Samford record 472 yards and Jeff Moore had a Samford record 260 yards receiving in the Bulldog football team's 59-52 win at Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon.

"This was a great win for Samford," head coach Pat Sullivan said. "I could not be more proud of our team and the resiliency they showed. They kept coming back. They weren't going to be denied."

Adcock completed 29-of-40 passes, including a career-high five touchdowns in the game. Moore's 260 yards came on nine catches, including three that went for touchdowns. As a team, Samford had 654 yards of total offense, to Tennessee Tech's 488 yards. Samford came from behind four times in the see-saw battle.

"I couldn't be more proud of Jefferson Adcock," Sullivan said. "He just played great, but this was a team win. It was just a big, big win for us."

For Tennessee Tech, Lee Sweeney completed 24-of-35 passes for 367 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Larry Shipp caught seven passes for 191 yards and two scores.

With the score tied at 52, Alex Barnett scored on a three-yard run with 52 seconds left to lift Samford to the win. Tennessee Tech had tied the game when Sweeney hit Ryan Nichols on a 25-yard touchdown, and the Golden Eagles converted a two-point conversion with 2:46 to play.

Tennessee Tech jumped on top first with a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Derek White scored on a 12-yard run with 10:03 to go in the first quarter. Justin Kraemer's point-after gave Tennessee Tech a 7-0 lead.

After Samford blocked a Tech punt, giving the Bulldogs the ball at the 50-yard line, Adcock hit Moore on a 50-yard touchdown with 4:20 to go in the opening period. Mark Prevost's PAT tied the score at 7-7. Tech's Kraemer kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:17 to play in the first quarter to give Tech a 10-7 lead. Tech's Sweeney hit Shipp on a 59-yard touchdown with 37 seconds to go in the first quarter, and the PAT made the score 17-7.

In the second quarter, Adcock hit Jonathan Lowery on a three-yard touchdown with 12:33 to go. Prevost's PAT cut the Tech lead to 17-14. Shipp returned a Samford kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown with 12:19 to go in the second quarter, but Kraemer's PAT was no good and the score remained 23-14.

Samford cut the lead to 23-21 when Adcock hit Joe Jones on a 40-yard touchdown with 11:11 to go in the second quarter. Prevost kicked a 29-yard field goal with 6:55 to go in the second quarter to give Samford a 24-23 lead. Tech's White scored on a six-yard run with 2:14 to go in the half, and Kraemer's PAT gave Tech a 30-24 lead. Samford's Brock Johnson scored on a 21-yard run just 50 seconds before halftime, and Prevost's PAT gave Samford a 31-30 halftime lead.

In the second half, Tech's Cass Barnes scored on a one-yard run with 3:24 to go in the third quarter to give TTU a 37-31 lead. Adcock then hit Moore on a 24-yard touchdown with 1:14 to go in the third quarter to give Samford a 38-37 lead.

Tennessee Tech retook the lead with 12:39 to go in the game when Sweeney hit Shipp on a 30-yard touchdown to make the score 44-38. Samford came back again when Adcock hit Moore on a 61-yard touchdown with 11:36 to play to give Samford a 45-44 lead. Barnett then scored the first of his two touchdowns on a two-yard run with 6:41 to play to give Samford a 52-44 lead, setting up the final two scores.

With the win, Samford improves to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Tennessee Tech drops to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Samford will return home to take on Jacksonville State on Nov. 3. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start from Seibert Stadium.
