BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Sophomore middle blocker Sheridan Stangohr and junior middle blocker Kirstein Sosnowski notched career highs in blocks Friday night in Samford's loss against Morehead State. The Eagles handed the Bulldogs their third straight conference loss, 3-1 (30-25, 24-30, 30-26, 30-27). Samford falls to 8-9, 3-4 n the OVC while Morehead State improves to 13-6, 7-1 in the OVC and holds on to a tie for first place in the conference.
Along with her career-high nine block assists, Stanoghr grabbed eight kills while hitting .368. Sosnowski had a career-high eight block assists along with 10 kills, three assists and one dig. Senior middle blocker Angela Dempski led the Bulldogs in kills and hitting, grabbing 13 kills while hitting .409. She also had one ace, one block solo and three block assists. Junior outside hitter Sara Sears posted her eighth double-double of the season, grabbing 12 kills and 10 digs while also having one block solo.
Junior Libero Courtney Gay had 22 digs, two assists and one ace while sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Gardner had four digs and five aces. Freshman outside hitter Samantha Bland had seven kills, eight digs, one assist and one block assist. Junior setter Jackie Jaszcz had 44 assists while serving up one ace and grabbing eight digs and three block assists. Sophmore outside hitter Katie Luckman added one assist and one digs. The Bulldogs out-blocked the Eagles 14-5 and out-hit them .275 to .222.
"It was good to see Angela (Dempski) and Courtney (Gay) step back in after fighting through some injuries this week," Samford head coach Michelle Durban said. "Kirstein (Sosnowski) and Sara (Sears) did great defensively and offensively for us, but as a team we have to learn how to finish games."
Samford makes one more stop before heading back to Birmingham. The Bulldogs play Eastern Kentucky Saturday at 2 p.m.
Morehead State 3, Samford 1
Morehead State took the early lead in game one, scoring the first two points before Sears put Samford on the board with a kill. The Eagles pushed the lead out to six but the Bulldogs charged back to cut the lead to three. Morehead State extended the lead to six again before the Bulldogs cut it to three again, but the Eagles would not give it up and went on to win, 30-25.
Again, the Eagles jumped out to an early two-point lead in the second game, but Sears tied it up for the Bulldogs with a kill and block, back-to-back. The Eagles answered back with a kill but Sears tied it again with a kill and with the help of a Morehead State error, Samford was back on top. The game was tied again at five and six, then eight, but the Bulldogs would take over the lead. Although, the Eagles would try to keep it close, Samford lead by as much as eight late in the game and would go on to win game two, 30-24.
Samford turned the tables in game three and jumped out to the early lead, grabbing the first point. Morehead State answered back but the Bulldogs jumped right back in taking a two-point lead on a kills by Sears and a Morehead State error. Samford pushed the lead out to three on a block by Dempski and Sears before the Eagles tied the game on a couple of kills and a block. The game was tied again at a 10 and 11 but the Bulldogs pulled back out to lead by four on a couple of Morehead State error, a kill by Sosnowski, and a block by Stangohr and Sosnowski. Samford continued the four-point lead until the Eagles charged back to tied the game at 24. Bland put the Bulldogs back on top with back-to-back kills, but Morehead State came back and took over, winning game three, 30-26.
The Bulldogs took an early three-point lead in the fourth game on a kill by Dempski, an ace by Bland, and then a block by Jaszcz and Dempski. Morehead State closed the lead to one with a kill and a block before Sears extended it to two with a kill. Samford led by as much as three before the Eagles tied it at 12 but the Bulldogs would push the lead back out to five and lead until late in the game. With the game tied at 23, the Eagles gathered some momentum and went on to win, 30-27.
