The Samford football team dropped a 24-12 decision to Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
With the loss, Samford drops to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in Ohio Valley Conference games. Jacksonville State is now 6-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.
"I am extremely proud of the effort the kids gave," Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said. "This game was important to them and it was important to our Samford family. I was proud of our defense, with the way they played. You have to tip your hat to Jacksonville State."
Samford's Jefferson Adcock completed 24-of-45 passes for 199 yards in the game. Jeff Moore caught four passes for 52 yards. Brock Johnson rushed six times for 49 yards. Place-kicker Mark Prevost was 4-for-4 on field goals in the game. Ty Levie was the team's leading tackler with 10, including nine solo stops.
For Jacksonville State, Daniel Jackson rushed 18 times for 103 yards. Cedric Johnson completed 7-of-13 passes for 60 yards in the game.
Jacksonville State struck on its first drive of the game when Ronald Murray scored on a one-yard run with 10:53 to play in the first quarter. Gavin Hallford's point-after gave the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead. Samford answered when Prevost connected on a career-long 48-yard field goal with 6:53 to play in the opening period to cut the JSU lead to 7-3.
Jacksonville State made the score 14-3 when Maurice Dupree scored on a 24-yard reverse with 6:45 to go in the second quarter. Hallford's PAT gave the Gamecocks an 11-point advantage. Prevost kicked his second field goal of the game, this one from 29-yard out to make the score 14-6.
The teams traded field goals in the third quarter. JSU's Hallford kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7:39 to go in the third quarter, and Samford's Prevost booted a 34-yarder with 5:25 to go to make the score 17-9 at the end of the third quarter.
Prevost connected on his fourth field goal of the game, this one from 39-yards out with 10:22 to go in the fourth quarter to cut the JSU lead to 17-12. JSU's Shawn Green scored on a three-yard run with 9:23 to go in the game, and Hallford's PAT gave the Gamecocks a 24-12 lead.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 8, when the Bulldogs play host to Tennessee State at 5 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
