Women's Basketball Earns 67-55 Win Over Austin Peay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team earned its third-straight win and fourth in its last five games in a 67-55 win over Austin Peay Saturday afternoon at Seibert Hall.

"I was very pleased with our team today," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I thought we controlled the game from start to finish. Even when they made a run, we stepped up and answered."

Veronica Pike scored 14 points for Samford (14-11, 9-7 OVC), and Monica Maxwell added 13 for the Bulldogs. Alex Munday scored 11 points, while Taryn Towns scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds, tying a career high.

For Austin Peay (8-17, 7-9 OVC), Alicia Watson scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Saundra Hale added 11 points for the Lady Govs.

The lead went back and forth early until, with Austin Peay leading, 7-6, Samford went on a 15-2 run to take a 21-9 lead with 9:53 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Munday. Austin Peay then went on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to four at 22-18 with 6:43 to go in the half following a three-pointer by Breana Link.

Samford pushed the lead back out to nine at 27-18 and 29-20, but a 7-0 run by the Lady Govs cut the lead to two at 29-27 with 3:09 to play in the half. Samford scored the last five points of the half to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.

Samford pushed its lead out to 10 at 37-27 with 18:16 to go following a three-pointer by Chelsee Insell. With Samford leading, 46-36, the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 18 at 56-38 with 10:26 to go after a three-pointer by Karmen Smith.

Samford pushed its lead out to 20 at 61-41 with 8:50 to play. With Samford leading, 65-45, the Lady Govs closed the game on a 10-2 run to make the final score 67-55.

Samford will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15, when the Bulldogs play at Morehead State. The game is scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off from Morehead, Ky.
