Big Second Half Gives Women's Basketball 62-51 Win At Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Samford women's basketball team outscored Eastern Kentucky, 33-17 in the second half on its way to a 62-51 win Saturday afternoon at EKU's McBrayer Arena.

"We really stepped up in the second half and made some defensive stops," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "Taryn (Towns) hit a big three and Alex (Munday) hit a big jumper down the stretch. It was just a good defensive effort, holding them to 17 points in the second half.

"Megan Wilderotter came up big for us today," Morris said. "Not only did she lead us in scoring, but she also held their point guard to no points in the game."

With the win, Samford improves to 16-11 overall and 11-7 in Ohio Valley Conference games. The Bulldogs are currently fourth in the OVC with two games remaining. Eastern Kentucky drops to 10-17 overall and 7-11 in conference play with the loss.

In the game, Alex Munday became Samford's all-time leading scorer. Her eight points in the game give her 1,253 career points, passing Amy Cochran's previous record of 1,247.

"Alex is a special player," Morris said. "It is a credit to her work ethic that she is our all-time leading scorer in her junior year."

Megan Wilderotter led Samford in scoring in the game with 20 points, tying a career high. Chelsee Insell followed Wilderotter with 15 points and eight rebounds. Veronica Pike played in her 111th game at Samford, breaking the school record in that category.

Eastern Kentucky was led by Amber Kirkpatrick and Ashley Cazee with 14 points each. Crystal Jones added 10 points for the Lady Colonels.

EKU jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with 17:16 to go in the first half. Samford cut the lead to three at 11-8 with 15:17 to go in the opening period. With EKU leading, 16-8, Samford went on a 10-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 10:43 to go in the half following a three-pointer by Wilderotter.

With Samford leading, 21-18, EKU went on a 10-0 run to take a 28-21 lead with 3:39 to go in the half after a jumper by Lauren Dubbert. EKU carried a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Samford scored the first five points of the second half to tie the score at 34-34. With EKU leading, 38-34, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 42-38 lead with 11:22 to go after a layup by Wilderotter.

After EKU came back to tie the score at 42-42, Towns hit a three-pointer and Munday followed with a jumper to give Samford a 47-42 lead with 6:44 to play. EKU answered with the next five points to tie the score at 47-47 with 5:24 to go in the game.

A jumper and a pair of free throws by Munday gave Samford a 51-47 lead with 3:47 to go in the game. After EKU came back to tie the score at 51-51, Samford finished the game with an 11-0 run to take the 62-51 win.

Samford will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 22, when the Bulldogs play host to Southeast Missouri. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off from Seibert Hall.
