The Samford baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision at 24th-ranked Auburn Tuesday afternoon at Plainsman Park.
With the loss, Samford drops to 4-5 on the season. Auburn improves to 11-1 with the win.
Samford senior starting pitcher Chandler Tidwell (1-1) had a strong outing for the Bulldogs, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound. Samford was led at the plate by Parker Gargis with a home run in a 1-for-3 performance. Bear Burnett, Bill Whitehead, John Morgan and Louis Rojas had a hit each for Samford.
For Auburn, Justin Bristow pitched 3.0 hitless innings in relief to pick up the win on the mound. Scott Shuman pitched the final inning to earn the save for the Tigers. Luke Greinke was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Auburn at the plate.
Samford jumped on the board first when Gargis hit a solo home run off the scoreboard in left-center field for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Samford remained in front until Auburn tied the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ben Jones hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Josh Donaldson to make the score 1-1.
Auburn took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bruce Edwards doubled and went to third on a Samford error, bringing Travis Coleman home for a 2-1 Auburn lead. Greinke then hit a two-run home run to right field with Edwards on base to make the score 4-1.
Samford will return to action on Friday, March 2, when the Bulldogs play the first game of a three-game series at Mercer.
