Samford Volleyball Begins Spring Practice

Feb. 6, 2007

2007 Spring Volleyball Schedule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford volleyball team has started preparing for the spring season. The Bulldogs will use the whole month of February for individual workouts, conditioning and weight training before getting together as a team starting March 5 to prepare for spring opponents and the 2007 season.

The Bulldogs have made several changes to their workouts for the spring, using some exercises that will increase strength and stamina, without the players even coming in contact with a ball.

"We have added some new things in and out of the gym this year and the girls have been very open to the new ideas," said Samford head coach Michelle Durban. "I have been pleased with the overall strength and conditioning of our team after such a long break. Katie Luckman has come back in great physical condition and that is helping her to push her teammates."

The main focus for Samford right now is individual training. The players are separated into groups according to their positions and are given specific workouts based on the needs of that position.

"We are all training individually right now," said defensive specialist Courtney Gay. "We are working really hard to get in shape so that we can have the stamina to be as successful as we need to be. It's really hard right now, but I know that the hard work will pay off."

"The individual workouts have been moving along well," said Durban. " I have been impressed with Sara Sears, Sheridan Stangohr and Jen Powers. I feel like these 3 players have come back and not missed a beat since the fall."

The Samford volleyball team will compete four times during the spring season, hosting its own spring tournament on March 31. On April 14, Samford will participate in a tournament hosted by UAB, and then follow that up with a scrimmage against Montevallo on April 18. They will wrap up the spring season with a tournament at Birmingham-Southern on April 28, where they began the 2006 season in August.
