Samford Finishes 17th In Tight Race At Furman Intercollegiate

March 25, 2007

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ---- After a tough weekend of playing with four players, the Samford men's golf team wrapped up play in the 38th Annual Furman Intercollegiate with a 17th place finish. The Bulldogs shot an even 900, shooting 302 on the day.

Bulldog senior Reed Davis made his way to the top five Saturday by shooting a Samford weekend low of 68. He finished the tournament Sunday shooting 73 and landing himself in a tie at fifth.

"I am so proud of the way that our guys played this weekend," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said. "It's so tough to play with four guys, and our guys handled it so well. We've had a tough season and a long Spring Break, and I couldn't have asked for more from these guys. They gave everything this weekend."

Andrew Villarreal finished second for the Bulldogs, shooting a total score of 223 and finishing in a tie at 36th. John Turnipseed and Jeremy Cox round out the Samford team with scores of 225 and 238, respectively.

Each day of the Furman Intercollegiate saw a different leader as Elon University led the field on Friday, then East Carolina jumped to the top spot on Saturday, and finally Virginia Tech making its way to number one on Sunday. The top five includes Elon at second place, fellow Ohio Valley Conference school Jacksonville State and Marshall University tied at third, and Old Dominion and East Carolina tied at fifth. Only 11strokes separates the first place team from the fifth place teams.

The Bulldogs will rest for a week before getting back on the green to prepare for a trip back to Spartanburg, S.C. to participate in the Wofford Invitational on April 2-3.
