For the second night in a row the Samford baseball team trailed UAB entering the ninth inning and came back to take the win in a 5-4 victory Wednesday night in front of 1,318 fans at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford trailed, 4-2 entering the ninth inning and plated three runs in the inning to take the win. Michael Marseco led the inning off by reaching base on a UAB error. Parker Gargis then walked and Bear Burnett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Luke Peavy was then hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the inning and make the score 4-3. Louis Rojas then walked to bring in the tying run. Garrett Rice then reached on an infield single to drive in Burnett for the game-winning run.
"The biggest thing, the difference in the game was our bullpen came in and put up some zeroes (on the scoreboard)," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "Doug (Denson) did a good job and Eric (Lassiter) did a great job of extending deep into the game for us after last night when we had to throw so many guys."
For the game, Samford (14-13) was led at the plate by Marseco, going 2-for-4. Peavy drove in three runs in a 1-for-2 performance. Rojas and Rice had an RBI each for the Bulldogs.
Doug Denson (1-1) pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up no runs on three hits to pick up the win. Eric Lassiter started the game on the mound and pitched 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
UAB (12-15) was led at the plate by Levi Patmon, Brint Hardy, J.R. Bond and Allen Aubin with two hits each. Grant Addison (0-1) pitched 1.1 innings in relief giving up three runs to take the loss.
UAB built a 4-0 lead, scoring a run each in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2. Peavy doubled to right-center field to drive in Burnett and Marseco for Samford's first two runs of the game.
Samford will return to action on Saturday when the Bulldogs play host to in-state and OVC rival Jacksonville State in a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
