Baseball Takes 1-0 Win Over Memphis

March 7, 2007

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - David Knapp pitched 7.0 shutout innings, giving up just two hits to pick up the win for Samford as the Bulldogs defeated Memphis, 1-0, Wednesday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"It was just an unbelievable performance by Davey today," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "He really learned from the game yesterday. He saw how Chandler (Tidwell) had success and went out and executed today. I couldn't be more pleased with our pitching and also our defense, playing an error-free game today."

Samford improves to 7-7 with the win, while Memphis drops to 7-3 with the loss.

Knapp (1-0) struck out four batters, while walking just one. Joseph Edens pitched the final 1.2 innings, holding the Tigers hitless to earn his fifth save of the season.

"Joseph came into a big situation and induced a double play, and then finished them off in the ninth," Dunn said.

Michael Marseco went 2-for-4 at the plate for Samford. Kyle Krebs had the lone RBI of the game. Garrett Rice and Tripp Swann had one hit each for the Bulldogs.

Memphis starting pitcher Dylan Cupples (0-1), in his collegiate debut, pitched 4.2 innings, giving up a run on three hits to take the loss for the Tigers.

Tyler Huelsing, Bill Moss and K.K. Chalmers had one hit each for Memphis at the plate.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the game scoreless, Rice led the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield. After Luke Peavy flied out to center field, Swann singled to left field and Rice moved to second base. After Marcus Rodriguez was retired, Drew Reagan walked to load the bases. Krebs then walked to bring in Rice for the game's only run.

Memphis had a chance to get on the board in the top of the eighth inning with runners on first and second with one out, but Edens got Will Petersen to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Samford will return to action on Friday, March 9, when the Bulldogs play the first game of a three-game series at UNC Asheville. The first pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Central time.
