Baseball Drops 7-6 Decision At Troy

TROY, Ala. - Troy's Clint Robinson hit two two-run home runs as the Trojan baseball team defeated Samford, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.

With the loss, Samford drops to 22-23, while Troy improves to 29-17.

Parker Gargis went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Samford. Michael Marseco and Wayne Miller had two hits each. Daniel Payne pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.

Behind Robinson for Troy, Ian Craze, Edgar Ramirez and Trevor Tyre had two hits each. Jonathan Sabat pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits to pick up the win. Josh Dew pitched the final inning to earn his eighth save of the season.

Samford jumped on top early with a run in the top of the first inning. Luke Peavy singled to center field to drive in Marseco, who led the inning off with a double, for a 1-0 Samford lead.

Troy came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ramirez singled up the middle to drive in Craze to tie the score at 1-1. The Trojans took the lead when Tyre singled up the middle to drive in Ramirez.

Troy added a run in the second inning to make the score 3-1. Shohei Fujita scored on an error for a two-run Troy lead.

Samford came back with three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Miller and Marseco each scored on Troy errors to tie the score. The go-ahead run was scored when Gargis singled to center field to drive in Bear Burnett.

Troy plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to retake the lead at 5-4. Robinson hit a two-run home run to right field with Ramirez on base to give the Trojans a one-run lead.

Robinson homered again in the bottom of the seventh inning with Ramirez on base to push the Trojans' lead to 7-4.

Samford plated two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Troy lead to 7-6. Louis Rojas scored the first run of the inning on a Troy error. Benji Waite later grounded out to drive in Garrett Rice for the game's final run.

Samford will be back in action Wednesday night when the Bulldogs play host to Jackson State. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
