Football Falls At 21st-Ranked Georgia Tech

ATLANTA - The 21st-ranked Georgia Tech football team jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead on its way to a 69-14 win over Samford in front of 43,288 fans Saturday afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

"We didn't get it done today, but we are fortunate, we only have to wait until Thursday to get rid of this sick feeling," Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said. "We will go back home and lick our wounds tonight and tomorrow night we'll start getting ready for Presbyterian."

For Samford (1-1), Jeff Moore caught six passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Jefferson Adcock completed 15-of-29 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman running back Chris Evans rushed 12 times for 49 yards, while freshman Alex Barnett scored his first collegiate touchdown, rushing seven times for 23 yards.

The game was Samford's first against a ranked Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) team. The loss was Samford's biggest since Sept. 12, 1992, when the Bulldogs lost at Auburn, 55-0

Georgia Tech (2-0) was led by Jonathan Dwyer, rushing nine times for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Tashard Choice rushed 11 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech jumped on top early when Choice scored on a nine-yard run on the Yellow Jackets opening drive. Travis Bell's PAT gave Tech a 7-0 lead with 11:48 to go in the first quarter. Georgia Tech scored again when Taylor Bennett scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 4:12 to play in the opening quarter. Bell's PAT made the score 14-0.

Choice scored his second touchdown of the day on a career-long 73-yard touchdown run with 1:01 to go in the first quarter. The extra point by Bell gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-0 lead. Dwyer scored on a 40-yard reverse with 23 seconds to go in the first quarter, and Bell's PAT made the score 28-0.

Tech's Greg Smith scored on a six-yard run with 10:39 to go in the second quarter. Bell added the PAT to give Tech a 35-0 lead. After Samford fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Bell kicked a 21-yard field goal with 9:02 to go in the second quarter to push Tech's lead to 38-0.

After a Samford fumble gave Georgia Tech the ball at the Samford six-yard line, Jamaal Evans scored on a six-yard run with 3:08 to go in the second quarter. Scott Blair added the PAT to give Tech the 45-0 lead.

Georgia Tech struck on its first drive of the second half when Dwyer scored on a 19-yard run with 12:50 to go in the third quarter. Bell added the extra point to give Georgia Tech a 52-0 lead. Bell added his second field goal of the day, a 31-yard kick, with 5:59 to go in the third quarter to push the lead to 55-0. Dwyer scored his third touchdown of the game on a 65-yard run with 2:55 to go in the third quarter, and Bell's PAT made the score 62-0.

Samford got on the board with 38 seconds to go in the third quarter when Barnett scored his first collegiate touchdown on a four-yard run. Mark Prevost added the extra point to make the score 62-7. After Georgia Tech added a fourth-quarter touchdown to make the score 69-7, Samford's Adcock hit Moore on a 34-yard touchdown with 5:49 to go to make the final score 69-14.

Samford will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 13, when the Bulldogs play host to Presbyterian College. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Seibert Stadium.
