The Eastern Kentucky women's basketball team shot 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from three-point range to defeat Samford, 72-45, Saturday afternoon at McBrayer Arena.
The loss ended Samford's six-game winning streak. The Lady Colonels shot 72.7 percent from three-point range in the first half and 62.5 percent in the second half. For the game, Samford made just 17.4 percent (4-of-23) of its shots from three-point range.
"We ran into a team that was absolutely on fire," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "They made us pay for any mistake we made. Any time we made a mistake, they made us pay with a three."
Samford (13-6, 6-3 OVC) was led by Emily London with 14 points and six rebounds. Alex Munday added 12 points for the Bulldogs.
EKU (10-6, 5-4 OVC) was led by Nikki Avery with 25 points, including a 7-for-10 performance from three-point range. Ashley Cazee added 15 points for the Lady Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky led through most of the first half. The Lady Colonels built an early 7-2 lead, but Samford scored the next five points to tie the score at 7-7 with 14:57 to play in the first half after a three-pointer by London.
EKU, however, went on a 22-3 run to take a 29-10 lead with 7:27 to go in the half. Samford then went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 10 at 31-21 with 3:56 to go after a pair of free throws by Taryn Towns.
The Lady Colonels pushed the lead back out to 15 at 36-21, and they took a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Samford scored the first five points of the second half to cut the lead to eight at 36-28. The Lady Colonels pushed the lead back out to 14 at 44-30 with 15:28 to go in the game.
Samford then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to eight at 44-36 with 14:26 to play after a jumper by Munday. EKU then went on a 15-0 run to push the lead to 23 at 59-36 with 6:18 to play after a three-pointer by Avery.
EKU pushed the lead out to as much as 28, and the Lady Colonels came away with the 72-45 win.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24, when the Bulldogs play host to Tennessee-Martin at 5:30 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center.
