Maxwell's Career-High Performance Leads Women's Basketball Past Lipscomb, 73-52

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford sophomore guard Monica Maxwell scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Bulldog women's basketball team to a 73-52 win over Lipscomb Wednesday evening at the Pete Hanna Center.

"I think Monica probably played her most complete game, offensively and defensively," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "In the last three or four games, she has played very well, I am very pleased with her and how she has progressed.

"I am pleased with our effort," Morris said. "We were up 19 at halftime and we came out and extended the lead. It was a good solid, team win. We were a little sloppy at the end, but I thought it was a good team win."

Behind Maxwell for Samford (8-5), Taryn Towns scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and dished out seven assists. Emily London added 10 points and five assists for the Bulldogs. As a team, Samford shot 54.5 percent from the floor, including a 41.7 percent effort from three-point range.

Lipscomb (2-11) was led by Katie Rollins with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jilian Partin added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bisons.

The game was close early, as the teams were tied, 6-6 with 15:27 to go in the first half. However, Samford went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-8 lead with 9:39 to play after a three-pointer by Maxwell.

Samford pushed its lead to 12 at 24-12 with 6:56 to play in the first half after a three-pointer by Alex Munday. Samford extended its lead to 21 at 38-17 with 1:07 to play in the half following a layup by Chika Okoli. Samford took a 40-21 lead into halftime.

Samford pushed its lead to 25 early in the second half at 52-27 with 14:27 to play in the game following a layup by Jennifer Elkins. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 31 at 60-29 with 11:08 to go after a layup by MaKenzie Spruiell.

Lipscomb then went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 60-39 with 6:59 to play after a layup by Rachel Davis. The Lady Bisons could get no closer than 20 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 73-52 win.

Samford will return to action on Saturday when the Bulldogs play at Tennessee-Martin. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip-off from Martin, Tenn., and it can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.al.com/wvsu.
