Samford Sweeps Western Carolina For 14th Conference Win

CULLOWHEE, N.C. ---- The Samford University volleyball team grabbed their 14th conference win Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Western Carolina. The Bulldogs have now extended their current win streak to seven and move to 25-3 overall while Western Carolina falls to 6-23 overall, 3-12 in conference play.

"Our girls did a very nice job today staying focused and on a game plan," Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. "We worked hard all week defending any transition and today, it was hard for Western to earn points on us."

Ashley Adams led the Bulldogs, knocking down 12 kills while hitting .500. She also added one ace and four digs. Kirstein Sosnowski had nine kills, hitting .400 while grabbing one dig and two block assists. Rachel Gadberry had six kills and tow block assists while Sara Sears added eight kills and one dig.

Hillary Fountain dished out 37 assists with one kill, one block assist, five digs and a career-high six aces. Courtney Gay had 11 digs and two assists while Katie Luckman had three kills and one block solo. Sheriden Stangohr had four kills one ace, one block solo and one block assist while Sarah Gardner had two aces and two digs and Shelby Brandon ended the match with a kills.

Samford 3, Western Carolina 0

Samford took an early two-point lead with a kill by Soznowski and block by Stangohr and Fountain, but Western Carolina answered right back with a kill and a block of their own. The Catamounts took the lead on a Samford error but Sears knocked down a kill to tie the score again. The Bulldogs then went ahead by three on a few WCU errors and a kill by Adams. The Catamounts fought back to get within one point, but the Bulldogs forged ahead and soon led by seven, 20-13. Western Carolina caught back up and got within five but Samford closed out the game with a block by Sosnowski and Gadberry and kills by Sears and Stangohr for the 25-19 win of the first set.

Western Carolina grabbed the first point of the second set, but Samford put up four straight points on kills by Adams, Sosnowski and Sears and an ace by Fountain to make it a three-point game. Western Carolina answered back to get within one on a kill and an ace. The Bulldogs then pushed out to a seven-point lead on back-to-back aces by Fountain and kills by Adams, Sears, Sosnowski and Gadberry. With the score at 17-10, the Bulldogs went on an 8-4 run to take the second set, 25-14.

Both teams traded errors for the first points of the third set, and then traded kills to tie the score at two. A kill by Adams, a Catamount error and a block by Sosnowski and Gadberry put the Bulldogs ahead by three and due to several errors by the Catamounts, Samford soon led by seven. With the score at 17-9, the Bulldogs went on an 8-3 run to take a 13-point lead and win set three, 25-12.
