The Samford baseball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play with a three-game series against UT Martin this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m., and a single game Saturday, also at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Bulldogs are currently 9-7 after dropping an 18-9 decision at Memphis Tuesday night. The Skyhawks enter the weekend with a record of 1-13 after being swept in a weekend series at Louisiana Tech last weekend.
Samford senior infielder Michael Rutledge is leading the team in batting with a .383 average, 23 hits, seven doubles and 16 RBI. Bear Burnett leads the team in home runs with three. Wayne Miller leads the team in triples with three, and he is tied with Rutledge for the team lead in doubles with seven. Jonathan Stephens (2-0, 2.52 ERA) and David Knapp (2-1, 3.22 ERA) have led the pitching staff so far.
UTM is led at the plate by Miles Hartsfield, batting .327 with four RBI. William Blackmon leads the team in RBI with nine. Eric Walker (1-2, 4.03 ERA) has been the leader of the Skyhawks' pitching staff.
Since joining the OVC prior to the 2004 season, Samford has a record of 10-2 against UT Martin. Under head coach Casey Dunn, Samford is 7-2 against the Skyhawks.
