Baseball Drops 8-7 Decision In 10 Innings At South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - The Samford baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision in 10 innings at South Alabama Tuesday night at USA's Stanky Field.

Samford (3-5) was led at the plate by Wayne Miller, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Bear Burnett and John Morgan each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Michael Marseco and Tripp Swann drove in two runs each for the Bulldogs. Michael Jarry pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits to take the loss.

South Alabama's (7-3) Greg Johnson pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits to pick up the win for the Jaguars. Ryan Bohanan and Jake Overstreet had three hits each for South Alabama.

With Samford trailing, 7-5, in the eighth inning, the Bulldogs plated two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the score at 7-7. Swann singled to left field to drive in Burnett and Michael Rutledge to tie the score and set the stage for extra innings.

After Samford failed to score in the top of the 10th inning, USA's Bunky Kateon singled through the right side of the infield to drive in David Doss for the game-winning run.

South Alabama took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth. Samford came back to take the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. USA answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.

Each team plated a run in the seventh inning to give South Alabama a 7-5 lead heading into the eighth inning.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, when the Bulldogs play host to Miami of Ohio in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
