Baseball Swept In Doubleheader At Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Samford baseball team was swept in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday evening at Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 7-6, and they fell in game two by a score of 11-4.

"When you don't pitch well and you play poor defensively, that is a bad combination," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "We made a lot of mistakes and did a lot of things poorly, and they did a great job of capitalizing on every mistake we made."

With the losses, Samford drops to 16-10 overall and 5-2 in OVC play. Jacksonville State improves to 13-15 overall and 6-2 in league games.

In game one for Samford, Michael Marseco was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Tripp Swann was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Bear Burnett was 2-for-4. Trent Hill entered the game in the ninth inning, giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss.

For JSU in the first game, Andrew Edge was 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Todd Cunningham, Steven Leach and Daniel Adamson had two hits each. Nick Hetland pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on four hits to pick up the win.

Samford led, 6-5, heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Edge led the inning off with a solo homer to center field to tie the score. The game-winning run was scored when Leach singled up the middle to drive in pinch runner Blake Seguin to give the Gamecocks the 7-6 win.

Samford jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the first inning. After Wayne Miller tripled to right-center field, Marseco followed with a triple to right-center to drive in Miller for the game's first run. Michael Rutledge then grounded out to shortstop to drive in Marseco for a 2-0 Samford lead.

JSU came back with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Samford plated another run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the JSU lead to 4-3. The Gamecocks added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 5-3. Samford, however, tied the score at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

The Bulldogs took the lead again with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Michael Johnson scored when Marseco reached base on an infield single for a 6-5 Samford lead.

In game two, Samford was led at the plate by Burnett, going 3-for-4. Swann was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Samford in game two. Andrew Jones pitched 4.2 innings, giving up 10 runs on 13 hits to take the loss.

For JSU in the second game, Cunningham and Jake Sharrock had three hits each. Ben Tootle pitched 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits to earn the win.

JSU plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Samford came back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Swann drove in a run and John Morgan drove in two runs to give Samford the lead.

The Gamecocks came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead. JSU added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to push its lead to 11-3. Samford came back with one final run in the seventh inning to make the final score 11-4.
